Abstract
Penetrating eye injuries are a very frightening finding at any age and for any reason. Most eye injuries can be avoided if proper safety measures are in place. This ophthalmic sonogram demonstrated a penetrating eye injury from a pellet gun with significant vitreous hemorrhage, total retinal detachment, and pellet fragments seen in the posterior sclera adjacent to the optic nerve. Gray-scale ophthalmic sonographic imaging using standard linear array transducers is an effective, noninvasive method to determine the location and size of a foreign body and associated vitreous and orbital pathology. If clinically indicated, color and spectral analysis can be used to evaluate blood flow in the vessels supplying the orbit.
