Abstract
Heterotopia of the thyroid gland is veryuncommon. Ectopic thyroid results from embryologicaberration characterized by the existence ofthyroid tissue in a site other than its usual locationanterior to the trachea. Ectopic thyroid tissue isusually found along the path of initial descent ofthe thyroid, representing a failure of the thyroidto descend completely. Thyroid ectopia mayalso be found in locations other than the typicalpathway of embryologic descent. It is importantto consider ectopic thyroid as a differentialdiagnosis when a mass is discovered in the neck, chest, or, rarely, other locations.
