Abstract
Burnout is an individual's reaction to chronic stress. Using the Maslach Burnout Inventory, this study surveyed a sample of sonographers and vascular technologists in the state of Tennessee. The objec tives of the study were to (1) determine whether there is a relationship of individual demographic characteristics, job-related variables, and/or career-related variables to the 3 sequential stages of burnout; (2) determine at what levels do sonographers and vascular technologists experience burnout compared to a national norm; and (3) determine whether sonographers and vascular technologists could identify methods of diminishing chronic stress in the workplace environment.Statistical analysis indicated that sonographers and vascular technologists experience moderate levels of all 3 sequential stages of burnout.
