In ongoing struggles for collective liberation, what use is theory? In this short commentary I respond to Bob Lake's provocative argument that theory is of little use to the people about whom it is usually made. While I share and admire Lake's sense of urgency and scepticism, I come to different conclusions about the uses and value of theory making, particularly when done by those understand themselves as part of the processes they study.
