New developments in information and communications technologies are increasingly being proposed as technological enhancements to healthcare delivery. However, if the full potential of such technological advances is to be realized from a clinical perspective, it is vital that proper methodology is in place to facilitate the assessment and evaluation of such proposed solutions in order to maximize the benefit which technology can offer. In this paper it is proposed that a model-based framework should provide the underpinning evaluative methodology. Candidate models are proposed. The applicability of this modelling approach is considered in the context of a recently developed prototype service for the telematic delivery of home and satellite haemodialyis in the management of end-stage renal disease.
