Teenage Employment in the Hospitality Industry: An Exploratory Study

Abstract

This study explored perceptions of teens regarding key employment issues that were important in selecting and retaining their places of employment. A sample of 156 high school students working in the hospitality industry and in other industries identified several key employment variables that are important for teens. Although there were no statistically significant differences between hospitality and nonhospitality students, the findings revealed that teens preferred to work for companies that offer flexible scheduling and are located close to home. In selecting their next jobs, teens preferred to work for companies respected by others, with friendly coworkers, and for companies with clear-cut rules. Recommendations for employers and career guidance counselors are discussed. These include convenient scheduling, better supervision, a comfortable working environment, and provision of transportation to work.
