Abstract

The recent publication on platelet indices and deep vein thrombosis is very interesting. 1 Cay et al concluded that “The MPV, MPM, and MPC may identify patients requiring aggressive antiplatelet treatment.” 1 I agree with the report. However, there are some points to be discussed. First, the determination of the platelet indices usually poses diagnostic problem. The results from different kinds of automated hematology analyzers can show poor agreement. 2 In addition, the time between blood collection and analysis can affect the determined parameter. 3 Also, if there is hemolysis, the platelet indices can be severely affected. 4 These points must be controlled in the study, and this cannot be done if the work is retrospectively done.
