Abstract
Basic Industries Limited (BIL) illustrates the challenges and dilemmas mid-sized organizations face on the path to growth and expansion. The focus here is on upgrading the capabilities of home grown managers: from being just technically competent in developing new products and processes to developing the understanding and capabilities of devising structures, systems and processes necessary to take the organization to the big league. But where does one begin, and how is this to be done? If, at BIL, job classification is to be the starting point about which senior managers of BIL have little understanding, and yet the consultant wants them to do the task, what then could be the implications? How is the capacity building exercise likely to unfold; how is change likely to be triggered off?
