Three related assay systems have been developed for the detection and evaluation of chemicals capable of inducing mitotic chromosome aneuploidy. These assays, which involve the use of yeast and mammalian cell cultures, have been evaluated for their potential utility by the study of the aneugenic (aneuploidy-inducing) potential of a series of eight carcinogenic and two non-carcinogenic chemicals.
The results of this study indicate that the assay of the potential of chemicals for their ability to induce cellular lesions which may lead to changes in chromosome number provides a valuable complement to the available in vitro assay systems for genotoxicity in that they are capable of detecting carcinogens that give negative results in bacterial mutagenicity assays.
