Reflective practice: a tool for measuring the development of generic skills in the training of professional musicians

Abstract

The 2006 ISME Commission for the Education of the Professional Musician (CEPROM) provided a unique forum for a number of important debates surrounding the preparation of young musicians for a professional career in the performing arts. One such debate considered the imperative of ensuring young professional musicians graduated from tertiary music institutions with skills beyond those of just performance practice: the more general or ‘generic’ skills that can be transferred into the many types of work situations they will inevitably face after their formal studies have been completed. Driven by the new imperatives surrounding work and changing careers, this debate dominated many of the discussions at the 2006 CEPROM. Building upon this debate, this article outlines a case study on the use of reflective journal writing as a curriculum tool to encourage music students to develop the generic skills of critical, creative and self-regulated thinking. Within the context of an Australian university landscape that is increasingly placing more emphasis on generic graduate outcomes, this article draws on the work of a number of educational theorists to provide a theoretical underpinning and rationale for reflective journal writing as a tool for embedding these generic skills in the music curriculum. The article concludes with some discussion of further research challenges and implications for curriculum design in tertiary music.

L’analyse de pratique professionnelle: un outil pour mesurer le développement des compétences générales dans la formation des musiciens professionnels

La Commission de 2006 de l’ISME pour l’Education du Musicien Professionnel (CEPROM) a crée un forum unique pour un certain nombre de discussions importantes entourant la préparation de jeunes musiciens dans une carrière professionnelle dans les arts du spectacle. Lors de ce débat, il a été considéré essentiel de fournir aux jeunes musiciens professionnels diplômés des institutions supérieures de troisième cycle, avec des compétences au-delà de la performance pratique: des compétences générales ou ‘génériques’ qui peuvent être transférées dans les nombreuses situations de travail qu’ils auront inévitablement à rencontrer après leurs études terminées. Conduit par les nouveaux impératifs qui entoure le travail et les carrières changeante, ce propos a dominé plusieurs des discussions aux 2006 CEPROM. Basée sur cette discussion, cet article décrit une étude de cas qui utilise l’écriture, à l’aide d’un journal comme outil pour encourager les étudiants de musique à développer les compétences génériques de la réflexion analysante, créatrice et auto-gérée. Dans le contexte de l’université Australienne qui met de plus en plus d’accent sur des résultats notés génériques, cet article débrousse le travail d’un certain nombre de théoriciens en éducation pour donner une base et un raisonnement théorique pour l’analyse pratique du journal comme outil pour inclure ces compétences génériques dans le programme d’études en musique. Le papier se termine avec quelques propositions concernant des défis pour la recherche et les implications pour le modèle des programmes scolaires de musique des troisièmes cycles.

Reflektierte Anwendung: Ein Arbeitsmittel um die Entwicklung der allgemeinen Fertigkeiten im Ausbilden von Berufsmusikern zu messen

Die ISME Kommission für professionelle Musikerziehung des Jahres 2006 (CEPROM) organisierte ein besonderes Forum für eine Anzahl von Diskussionen die sich um die Vorbereitung von jungen Musikern für ihre Berufskarriere in Bereiche der darstellenden Künste drehte. In einer dieser Diskussionen wurde betont, wie wichtig es sei zu gewährleisten, dass junge professionelle Musiker, die in tertiären Musikinstituten diplomiert worden sind, über zusätzliche Fertigkeiten verfügen sollten und nicht nur derjenigen der Praxis im Auftreten. Dass sie über allgemeinen Fertigkeiten verfügen, die übertragen und angewendet werden können auf die verschiedensten Arbeitssituationen, mit denen die Studenten nach dem üblichen Abschluss unvermeidlich konfrontiert werden. Angetrieben vom neuen notwendigen Berufsumfeld und wechselnden Karrieren beherrschte dieses Thema viele Diskussionen in der CEPROM 2006 Aufbauend auf dieser Auseinandersetzung, hebt dieser Bericht eine Fallstudie hervor, die Musikstudenten ermutigt die reflektierende Tagebuchführung zu gebrauchen,diese als Mittel zum Lehrplanaufbau und um die allgemeinen Fähigkeiten zu kritischem und selbständigem Denken zu entwickeln. Dies im Context und Umfeld einer australischen Universität, die vermehrt die Gewichtung auf Diplomierte mit allgemeinen Fähigkeiten legt. Dieser Bericht basiert auf der Arbeit vieler Erziehungswissenschaftler,die alle unterstreichen, dass die Anwendung einer reflektierenden Tagebuchführung ein Arbeitsmittel darstellt, das in den Musiklehrplan für allgemeine Fertigkeiten integriert werden kann.Der Bericht endet mit einer Diskussion über zukünftige Forschungsmöglichkeiten und Folgerungen für die Lehrplangestaltung auf der tertiären Ausbildung.

Práctica reflexiva: una herramienta para medir el desarrollo de destrezas genéricas en la formación de los músicos profesionales

El seminario de 2006 de la Comisión para la Educación del Músico Profesional (CEPROM) de ISME aportó un foro excepcional para importantes debates sobre la preparación de los jóvenes músicos para una carrera profesional en las artes escénicas. Uno de esos debates se centró en el imperativo de garantizar que los jóvenes músicos profesionales graduados de instituciones musicales superiores desarrollen más destrezas que la mera práctica interpretativa: las destrezas más generales o ‘genéricas’ que pueden ser transferidas a los diferentes tipos de situaciones laborales que inevitablemente enfrentarán después de completar sus estudios formales. Llevados por los nuevos imperativos relacionados con el trabajo y las carreras cambiantes, este tema centró muchos de los debates del seminario 2006 de CEPROM. Basándose en esos debates, este artículo informa acerca de un estudio de caso sobre el uso de la escritura de diarios reflexivos como herramienta curricular para animar a los estudiantes de música a desarrollar las habilidades genéricas de pensamiento crítico, creativo y auto-regulado. Dentro del contexto de una universidad australiana que enfatiza cada vez más los resultados genéricos de los graduados, este artículo se basa en el trabajo de un número de teóricos educacionales para proporcionar un fundamento teórico y una razón para el uso de la escritura de diarios reflexivos como herramienta para incorporar esas destrezas genéricas en el currículo musical. El artículo concluye con un análisis de ulteriores desafíos investigativos y de las implicaciones para el diseño curricular de la música en la educación superior.
