Abstract
Introduction:
Pheochromocytomas occur in up to 5.7% of patient with neurofibromatosis, type 1 (NF1). Laparoscopic adrenalectomy for tumors larger than 6 cm remains open to debate because of concern about obtaining clear margins and capsular disruption. We present the case of a 35-year-old man with a history of NF1, with a 10 cm left sided pheochromocytoma found during a workup for hypertensive crisis. After titration of alpha and beta blockade, he underwent a laparoscopic transperitoneal adrenalectomy without complication. The patient was discharged on postoperative day 2, with normalization of his plasma free metanephrine and clear margins on his final pathology. For select patients with large pheochromocytomas, minimally invasive adrenalectomy remains a safe and feasible option to facilitate a decreased length of stay and quicker recovery.
