Abstract
Past, present and some future efforts of Artificial Intelligence developments in Japan will be overviewed. Emphasis will be given to automatic translation, AI development tools, and expert systems (ES) available or under development in Japan.
A particular AI development tool, SOGEN, will be illustrated and application areas shown, including diagnostic systems for Chinese medicine, trouble-shooting systems for electric appliances, and a new product development system.
Finally, lessons learned from the use of AI will be summarized.
