Abstract
A new Schiff base formed by coupling 2-hydroxy-l-naphthaldehyde and Betti base can selectively recognise Cu2+ over other metal ions such as Zn2+, Cd2+, Sn2+, Pb2+, Hg2+, Ni2+, Mn2+, Cr3+, alkali metals and alkaline earth metals in acetonitrile/water. Cu2+ binds one mole of the base causing an obvious blue-shift (Δ = 43 nm) in its absorption spectrum and quenching its fluorescence emission. The stability constant is estimated to be 1.25 × 104 M−1.
