Recent developments in the techniques for producing atomic and molecular ions, in some cases in selected rovibronic states, are reviewed. The main emphasis is placed on threshold photo-electron, and in particular zero kinetic energy (ZEKE) photoelectron, techniques. The aim is to make this information accessible to those whose main interests lie in the study of the kinetics of gas phase ion–molecule reactions.
