The interlacing course of the left biliary duct with the left portal vein is a normal finding. In 20 random right upper quadrant ultrasound examinations, the left biliary duct was seen interlaced with the left portal vein by gray scale and color Doppler ultrasound. After first observing this normal variant, a prospective evaluation of 100 right upper quadrant ultrasound images revealed its occurrence in 2% of cases.
