Sonographers have been participating with physicians in conducting research, but are just beginning to design and implement their own projects. Many clinical, technical, sociologic, ethical, and administrative issues should be examined scientifically by sonographers. This article describes basic research methodology and provides concrete guidelines and examples for applying it in examining phenomena related to diagnostic ultrasound.
