Abstract
This case study uses machine learning and generative AI to audit content diversity and source representation in The Scope, a Boston-based hyperlocal news outlet focused on underrepresented communities. Text analysis reveals geographic coverage, topical focus and quoted source demographics. Student journalists quoted more women and fewer public officials compared to professional norms. This study demonstrates AI’s potential to support small newsrooms in enhancing diversity, while addressing the ethical use of commercial AI in journalism.
