At the prospect of the accession of Bulgaria to the EU, the concern over the anticipated challenges equal to those of other member states from the former Communist bloc is hard to dismiss. In order to address this issue, two policies of the EU, namely, the single European market and the regional policy, where most challenges to its governance are likely to emerge, have been chosen for the in-depth analysis of this paper. While evaluating the effects of the accession of Bulgaria on these policies, this paper has come to a conclusion that the conventional view of the a priori negative impact expected by the accession of Bulgaria needs to be reassessed, especially when the implications of its being a small state are included in the parameters of this study.
