Abstract

Title: Intersex Studies: A Systematic Review of International Health Literature
In the original piece a sentence noting sometimes extreme polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)-related hyperandrogenism can be classified under the intersex umbrella, cited a 2010 study by Huang, Brennan, and Azziz titled “Prevalence of Hyperandrogenemia in the Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Diagnosed by the National Institutes of Health 1990 Criteria” published in Fertility and Sterility. This paper showed the prevalence of hyperandrogenemia but does not directly explore intersex classifications.
The author replaced the citation with a 2016 study by Jones et al., in which multiple participants with PCOS-related hyperandrogenemia directly do choose to use intersex classifications in referring to their experiences and self-selected to participate in an “intersex” study. It is important to change the citation as the use of intersex terminologies or classifications by people with PCOS-related hyperandrogenemia only occurs sometimes and cannot be assumed for any given individual or group with PCOS-related hyperandrogenemia.
