Abstract

The most recent advances in clinical management of digestive diseases, state-of-the-art basic and translational research, and many other scientific highlights have been presented at the 21st United European Gastroenterology Week (UEG Week), hold at the ICC Berlin, Germany, from October 12 to 16, 2013. Hot topics at this year’s Opening Plenary Session include “Therapeutic endoscopy: A paradigm shift in managing dysplasia and early cancer”, “Bringing science into the management of functional gastrointestinal disorders” and “Linking human genetics with gut microbiota in inflammatory bowel disease”.
Immediately following the Opening Plenary session “What’s new in 2013?” took place, a session at which leading European figures have summarised the big changes in clinical practice over the last year, and top journal editors have described the best new published research. Our popular “Today’s Science; Tomorrow’s Medicine” initiative took place throughout Monday and Tuesday, with top scientists from around the world updating you on new advances in genetics, and their implications for pathogenesis and stratified treatment in all our subject areas.
Outside the Plenary Session, there have been major advances described throughout oral and poster sessions. “The standard of abstracts submitted to the meeting has improved measurably again this year!” says John Atherton, Chair of the UEG Scientific Committee.
