Abstract
The need for sustainable, renewable energy solutions has increased due to the world's rapidly expanding energy demand and growing economic and environmental concerns. Because they can improve energy security and lessen environmental damage, biofuels are a prospective substitute for fossil fuels. However, due to several financial, technical, economic, social, and environmental hindrances, biofuel production and widespread use are still in their infancy. In particular, one of the biggest hindrances still facing society is the adoption of biofuels as a common energy source. Using the Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory method (DEMATEL), this study seeks to identify, evaluate, and rank the major hindrances to the use of biofuels as a future fuel. Twenty-seven hindrances were identified following a thorough review of the literature and expert consultations; they were grouped into six main categories. A sensitivity analysis was performed to assess the robustness of the ranking results, and a DEMATEL-based study was utilised to identify the cause-and-effect relationships among these hindrances. Researchers, legislators, and industry stakeholders can use the data to develop targeted policies that encourage the use of biofuels and advance sustainable energy systems.
