Abstract
This paper provides a guide to the different sources of support for research available in the United Kingdom, and clarifies how these relate to different aspects of a research study in intensive care. It lists the different activities and elements that need to be considered when planning a research study to ensure that it is appropriately resourced, documents how funding for the different research costs and activities should be sought, and gives practical advice regarding how to accurately and realistically cost an intensive care trial.
