Abstract
Parkinson's disease is a condition that anyone with a modicum of medical knowledge can recognise in the street - as indeed how it was studied by James Parkinson himself. Its three characteristic features are:
1. Increase in the tone of the voluntary muscles (rigidity).
2. Slowness of movement (bradykinesis).
3. Tremor (the characteristic ‘pill rolling’ movements of the fingers).
