Social workers are often called to intervene in situations that are difficult to solve because of their complexity. The article proposes a theoretical framework grounded in complexity and chaos theories that explores the structure and non-linear causality of complex systems, their complex and non-linear dynamics and different conditions leading to adjustment, adaptation and learning.
Findings
While examples inspired by practice and research findings with families and various professionals are used to illustrate complex situations, the article rather presents different notions related to this theoretical framework.
Applications
Some implications for practice and education are explored as a way to encourage discussions with regards to the value of a theoretical framework based on complexity for social work professionals.
