■ There is a need for legal clarification of the concept of informed consent in minors.
■ Paediatric nurses need to take a more active role in advocating for the 'Gillick competent' minor.
■ The concept of informed consent continues to provide challenges for practice in paediatric nursing.
■ Informed willing consent in 'Gillick competent' minors requires working effectively in partnership with the child, family and multidisciplinary team.
