Research and clinical approaches to recovery from brain damage were dominated by localizationist concepts for more than a century following an important publication by Broca in 1861. Thus, concepts of brain plasticity were not in the mainstream of the neurosciences until recently. The conceptual and research bases for recovery, even in the adult injured brain, are examined. The capacity for functional recovery and the conditions and procedures necessary to obtain the recovery are discussed.
