The pathology of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is reviewed using post-mortem material and observations at operation. Different patterns of dysplasia, found macroscopically and microscopically, are related to the different stages of foetal maldevelopment. We believe that an understanding of the morbid anatomy and histology is the cornerstone from which a rational treatment protocol can be developed.
