Abstract
This article, based on the research of one of the authors into hotel general managers' effectiveness, maintains that we can better understand the job of a hotel general manager by analyzing the influences that shape it. The two major contextual elements that influence the job are job demands and relationship issues. These two elements differ according to the time-frame (short-run, intermediate-run, or long-run) under consideration. They give rise to specific job functions and concomitantly suggest various managerial work roles that need to be performed in each job function. Finally, the importance of the communications requirement for being effective in the job is emphasized.
