Abstract
The purposes of this study were to assess student achievement with discussion as the intervention, investigate participation in the discussion segment of a course employing the case method, and assess students' attitudes toward the discussion segment. A nine item pre- and posttest concerning a personnel management case were administered to an experimental group (N = 29) and control group (N = 29). Only the experimental group had class discussion on the case that was presented between the two test administrations. Findings showed a significant increase in scores between the pre- and posttests for the experimental group, as well as a significant difference between the two groups for five items. Students' attitudes toward discussion were assessed using a 12-item survey. Mean scores for all items were > 3.58 for both groups on a five-point scale with 5=strongly agree.
