Abstract
In 1988 an artificial intelligence (AI) yield management system prototype was installed at the Royal Sonesta Hotel in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This "expert system"came into being through the joint efforts of Computerized Lodging Systems, Inc. who supplied the property management system (PMS), Eloquent Systems Corporation who developed the yield management software and the interface forthe PMS, and Sonesta Hotels International providing the "expertise." The focus of this paper is an analysis to date of the AIlExpert yield management system at the Royal Sonesta Cambridge. A framework for measuring the effectiveness of the prototype system is also developed. An overview of yield management and AIlExpert systems is presented.
