Abstract
In this essay, the authors analyze two different knowledge management (KM) approaches in the semiconductor industry: the object-based KM (OBKM) and community-based KM (CBKM) models. This reveals that organizational knowledge is not only distributed differently in different workplaces but also embedded in the specific context of interactions. The authors then illustrate that the CBKM model complements the OBKM model based on the complex adaptive system perspective. Furthermore, the adaptive approach that allows actors to benefit from both models in their work practices is proposed. Finally, theoretical and practical implications, as well as potential areas for further inquiries, are identified.
