In Situ Compatibilization of the Blends of Low-density Polyethylene (LDPE) and Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) Rubber by Ethylene Methyl Acrylate (EMA) Copolymer

Abstract

The blends of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) rubber have been compatibilized with the help of ethylene methyl acrylate (EMA) copolymer. The optimum levels of EMA, based on the maximum strength properties observed, have been found to be 2, 4, 8, and 10 wt.% for LDPE-PDMS 70/30, 60/40, 40/60, and 30/70 blends, respectively. This has been further confirmed from their dynamic mechanical analysis, adhesion studies, X-ray diffraction studies, and phase morphology. Dynamic mechanical analysis exhibits improved compatibility of the blend constituents with addition of EMA. Adhesion strength (lap shear) improves with addition of EMA in the blends. With the optimum level of EMA a higher degree of crystallinity and finer phase morphology are observed.
