Abstract
The commitment of postcolonial studies to honor the perspectives of oppressed and marginalized groups is commendable. However, allowing the contemporary context of any group to determine the meaning of a Scripture passage is suspect. The context of the composition of the text, rather than the context of the reader, should guide interpretation.
