Abstract
– Although the number of findings are increasing, interstitial cystitis is still not a very frequent chronic disease, making its diagnosis and treatment difficult. In reviewing the etiopathogenetic theories, diagnostic criteria and therapies, often still empirical and based on ex adjuvantibus standards, the authors emphasise how interstitial cystitis may, in the more advanced stages, result in highly invalidating clinical forms and even renal failure. The fact that it is more frequently detected abroad (twice the number compared to Italy) suggests that examinations in our country may be incorrect and incomplete.
