About 25% of all prostate cancers occur in the transition zone (TZ). TZ carcinoma are often well differenziateci and considered clinically unimportant. On the other site a subset of these tumours characterized by high tumour grade has a significant risk of extraprostatic spread, margin positivity and possible biochemical failure. Routine TZ biopsy does not substantially increase the prostate cancer detection rate; however, it can be useful in patients that require repeat biopsy.
We retrospectively analyzed 13 patients with TZ prostate carcinoma in order to evaluate the incidence and the biological behaviour of these types of neoplasm.
