Abstract
There were four hundred patients with acute injuries such as sprain, contusion, abrasion, laceration or fracture cured by acupuncture treatment only or with modern medicine together. 113 of 400 (28%) patients showed excellent results; 256 (64%) showed good effects and 31 (8%) showed poor response. Yang-Ling-Chuan (G34) was the main point for all of them. From the 369 cases of good acupuncture effect, we found that 82 (22%) patients showed excellent effect only by receiving acupuncture at Yang-Ling-Chuan; 31 (11%) of the rest of the 287 patients got excellent response after using other associated points and 256 (89%) showed good response.
The effect of acupuncture treatment in acute injuries is not only in the subsiding of the sensation of fullness or pain, but also in the relaxation of muscles, increased range of movement, and shortened duration of recovery. We still do not understand the mechanism of the dramatic effect. It might be associated with neuro-humoral effect.
Owing to the good effect of acupuncture treatment as an analgesia, we must be very careful when we treat acute injuries. We should not ignore the underlying pathology or delay the treatment by modern medicine simply because there has been relief of symptoms by acupunc ture treatment.
