Abstract
Discusses the needs of all small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to get the right flow of information into their organizations and how the Internet can help that process. The basic information needs of small businesses are reviewed in terms of reference sources and regular information about the operating environment and processes and techniques used to run operations effectively. The various categories of such information are listed and briefly described. Pays particular attention to the opportunities presented by the Internet to small companies, in terms of: the range of valuable reference sources available; up-to-date news and comment; sources for ideas generation; government policy and legislation; people and business finding; travel information; and training courses. The ways in which the Internet is revolutionizing the economics of many businesses is also noted with particular reference to sales and marketing; electronic mail; market research; new product development; recruitment benefits; sales benefits; paperwork reduction; and online auctions. Although many small companies do not yet see or comprehend the benefits available to them from the Internet, the reality is that the Internet gives every small business an extraordinary opportunity to transform the way in which it operates and to compete with big business on a much more level playing field.
