Abstract
The U.S. federal government has played a key role in the evolution of health care research in the twentieth century. Yet, while funds have provided support for training investigators, building facilities, and conducting research into the causes and cures of diseases, only recently has there been significant work on the delivery of health care services. The challenge now is to convert the results of such research into changes in the health care system. Demonstration of the role of active leadership in translating research results into improved health care at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs may serve as a model for similar efforts.
