Abstract
The concepts dying respectively seriously ill are often used synonymously in both nursing practice and literature. The purpose of this paper was to define the concept of dying in order to promote theoretical clarity for nursing science. A concept analysis was undertaken, using the method described by Walker & Avant (1). After extensive dictionary searches and review of literature the significant attributes of dying were defined. Demonstration cases are presented to clarify the concept further. Antecedents and consequences of dying are also explored.
