Abstract
The overall aim if the study is to make explicit the central significance of consolation as a concept and phenomenon. The theoretical perspective of the study is based on caritas as the fundamental motive of caring science (cf. Eriksson 3, 7). The approach presupposes an analysis of concepts and is based on Koort and Eriksson (14, 10). The analysis is interpreted against the background of theory (11) and the material for it is derived from an empirical study of consolation (16).
The result is presented in the form of a semantic analysis and various conclusions.
The discriminatory trend of the semantic analysis brings out four categories of concepts. The main category is «comfort», «relief» and «solace». The second category is confidence; the third «encouragement», «courage»; the forth, «help».
Interpretention of the result leads to the following conclusions: 1. Consolation is soothing and gives a sense of peace, joy and relief. 2. Consolation means confidence, hope and trust. 3. Consolation gives the patient strength. 4. Consolation is help and charity.
