Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine how nursing personnel experience their work at long-term geriatric institutions. The study was conducted at five community hospitals in a province in southern Finland. The data was collected using a questionnaire. The sample consisted of 248 nurses on 13 wards, and the response rate was 85 per cent (N=210). Data was analysed by conducting cross tabulations and one way analysis of variance. The results showed that the nurses experienced the physical, psychological and work community loads of their work as quite small. However, a large part of the respondents experienced their work at longterm geriatric institutions as meaningless and felt a lack of social respect for their work. The oldest of the respondents (aged 46 or over) and those who had worked in the nursing field for over 10 years expressed their preferential to work especially at the geriatric institutions. The enrolled and licensed nurses experienced the greatest physical work load.
