This paper off ers a pragmatic view of the design aspect of guidelines with respect to the use of local or international economic evaluations. Four types of study design: modeling, retrospective, prospective, and bridging are described and evaluated and their relationship to clinical trials is discussed. In addition, information is provided on outcome strategies, data analysis, and the importance of effectiveness measures in the selection of suitable endpoints.
