Abstract
In the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries, effort directed at knowledge integration can enhance the prospects for commercial advantage. This paper examines the paradoxical situation that often arises, characterized by information overload but knowledge deficiency, and the need for intellectual involvement in information assimilation. In innovative and learning organizations this involvement cannot be entirely devolved to remote systems or externalagencies. Knowledge integration is presented as an aspect of knowledge management that is frequently overlooked, but one that is important for developing organizational intelligence. Processes of knowledge assimilation and structuring, as they pertain to significance and relevance, are examined, and the ways in which integrated knowledge can assist with innovation and competitive intelligence are discussed.
