Abstract
Increasing travel is heightening government and industry awareness of the need for national and international health, safety, and security policies and employee education and training programs targeting the well-being of all travelers. This article summarizes cohesive measures and initiatives in the 1980s and 1990s developed by the United States, in concert with industry organizations and the international community. These activities underpinned the far-reaching work of the National Traveler Safety Team, a product of the White House Conference on Travel and Tourism, held in Washington, D.C., October 30-31, 1995, and helped place the issue of traveler health, safety, and security permanently on the international policy agenda.
