Abstract
Recreation planning agencies increasingly are becoming market-oriented, and resources are being managed to meet standards of cost effectiveness. As a part of this new perspective, recreation planners and managers are employing locational analysis to aid their site selection and development decisions. This study illustrates the use of locational analysis in evaluating the potential for campground development in Texas, and reveals that successful commercial campground operators in Texas have tended to locate near large bodies of water, population centers, and major thoroughfares. The results also indicate, however, that few areas in the state warrant new campground development. Finally, it was suggested that beyond locational decisions managerial strategies strongly influence the success of commercial campgrounds.
