Abstract
In this study, researchers examine effective practices used to bolster the outcomes and experiences of Black K-12 students in Los Angeles County. Utilizing interview data from an intentional selection of schools and community organizations, labeled “Bright Spots,” we challenge the often bleak, deficit-oriented narrative of Black students, their schools, and neighborhoods with an exploration of key practices and approaches used in successful educational spaces. Strategies used by educators at these sites offer strong examples for practices of student support, engagement, and empowerment. We conclude with recommendations informed by the shared knowledge of study participants that illuminate how educational ecosystems can be marshalled to better support Black student academic outcomes and well-being.
