Abstract
One method of tackling the worsening teenage smoking problem in Wales is through the application of school smoke-free policies. However, in Welsh secondary schools the current situation in terms of the existence and scope of smoke-free policies is variable, This research was designed to explore the reasons for these variations. Secondary schools in one unitary authority were contacted and interviews carried out with teachers. The findings demonstrate the complex nature of the situation in schools and the difficult decisions facing school managerial staff. On the basis of the information gathered, possible ways forward are described.
