Abstract
Introduction:
In patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC), survival benefit may be achieved with complete resection of metastatic lesions. In this scenario, laparoscopy may have a role by decreasing operative morbidity and shortening convalescence.
Patients and Methods:
We depict a case of an 84-year-old woman presented with a 5-cm interaortocaval mass 5 years after a right radical nephrectomy for pT3N0Mx RCC. The mass was found on follow-up computed tomography. No other apparent metastases were detected. She was asymptomatic and had an excellent performance status.
Results:
A 5-port approach was employed for laparoscopic excision of interaortocaval mass. Operating time was 174 minutes. Estimated blood loss was 700 mL. Hospital stay was 2 days. Time for complete convalescence was 2 weeks. Final pathology report confirmed metastatic RCC. The patient remained recurrence-free at 6 months.
Conclusions:
Laparoscopic excision of RCC metastases in the vicinity of the great vessels is technically feasible. Potentially, this can be the preferred approach in the hands of advanced laparoscopists given the potential for fast recovery.
