Abstract
Lidocaine hydrochloride is used as a topical and an injectable anesthetic agent as well as an intravenous antiarrhythmic agent. It is also commonly found in over-the-counter moisturizers, sunburn relief agents, hemorrhoidal creams, and topical antibiotic formulations. There are few reports of immediate hypersensitivity to lidocaine; however, delayed-type hypersensitivity has been even less recognized. Type IV hypersensitivity, although not life threatening, may result in limiting therapeutic options in the surgical candidate.
