Abstract
Recently, a topical steroid ointment containing the lanolin derivative, Amerchol CAB, was introduced in Sweden. Amerchol CAB is a solid, emollient, multisterol extract of lanolin alcohols in petrolatum. Adverse reactions to Amerchol CAB seem not to have been published in the dermatological literature. However, there is a possibility of simultaneous hypersensitivity to Amerchol CAB and lanolin. To elucidate this issue, some studies were performed. Ten Amerchol L101-hypersensitive patients were patch tested with various lanolin derivatives, including Amerchol CAB. Nine patients reacted positively to both Amerchol CAB and Amerchol L101. A use test with the topical steroid preparation containing Amerchol CAB was performed in these 10 patients. Only one patient reacted positively. Amerchol CAB was also inserted in a routine patch-test series, and 15 of 749 patients (2.0%) reacted positively.
